Over the last 15 months
there have been 2 fatalities on a scissor lift at the new Royal Adelaide
Hospital. After the most recent death, the CFMEU Secretary Aaron
Cartledge, said a series of safety briefings would be held before any
work on the site resumed.
“There would be no work with scissor lifts on this site until further
notice,” he said. “They will start working through their job safety
analysis and going through what activities they have to do with scissor
lifts and what other (equipment) they can use instead.” “We really need
to have a look at these incidents and come up with recommendations on
our use of this equipment – is it training, is it fatigue, is it
experience, are there devices that can be put on this equipment to make
them safer?” Mr Cartledge said.
The Police and SafeWork SA were investigating the incidents and
Inspectors have been at the site. This just highlights the absolute
importance of having in place a safety process that all your staff are
aware of and more importantly your training is up-to-date. No worker
should go to work and not come home to their family because of a
preventable workplace accident!
The Master Builders Association of NSW is releasing a new training
package in association with SafeWork NSW, this is an interestingly new
way by using an augmented reality app. You can read all about his
